Review by Coyote J of
Feeding Fingers CD release (January 27, 2009)
of BABY TEETH

*This review was in Birmingham Weekly
the week of October 31, 2008*

ARTIST: FEEDING FINGERS
CD: BABY TEETH
LABEL: STICKFIGURE

Post-punk, dark wave provocateurs, FEEDING FINGERS return with 'BABY TEETH,' the follow-up to their widely-acclaimed 2007 effort 'Wound In Wall.'  This is an ongoing side project from multi-media artist Justin Curfman who lends his otherworldly, angst-ridden, haunting howls to yet another fine disc of stripped and naked minimalist post punk -- in the grand tradition of early Cure music (circa '17 seconds' and 'Faith'), when The Cure was truly post-punk and not just regurgitating over-bloated arena dark wave hoping to score a Top 40 hit or two on radio.

While Feeding Fingers' fine debut 'Wound In Wall' was a little more immediate and radio-friendly, there was also a helter skelter feel to the proceedings as tracks lurched between souls in isolation, souls in reflection, and souls who felt just plain goofy; its strength is its diversity of sounds, which also may have put off a few listeners in the process, although I was not in that camp myself.

The track 'Never Light' kicks off the new album, 'Baby Teeth,' with a mellow fade in, a jaunty, but smooth as silk guitar riff, driving bass lines complimented by some catchy and relaxing piano hooks, all of which immediately tells the listener that the skies have turned gray, the leaves are turning brown, and snow clouds are billowing on the horizon 'until the end of time...' Simply put, 'Baby Teeth' is the quintessential winter disc for cold and rainy December afternoons. The sad, but somehow celebratory tone, is carried onto the second track (perhaps the best track on the new CD), the mournful and lovely, 'She Hides Disease.' Again, we may need to use early Cure as a reference point (if 'Faith' era Robert Smith was your cup of tea, then this track is a must listen for the winter of 2008-2009). The title track, 'Baby Teeth,' follows and is the most radio-friendly track on the new CD, successfully channeling some of the better moments from Depeche Mode with all the curvy touches fans have come to expect on a Feeding Fingers disc. The rest of the disc maintains a mournful, yet peaceful vibe, occasionally channeling some unexpected moments (such as the driving claustrophobia and paranoia inherent in the stellar track 'No Movement in Water'), as well as the quiet elegance and impending doom of 'Plain Faced Afternoons.'

My biggest criticism of Feeding Finger's new work would have to be that no post-punk masterpiece jumps out at you, such as 'Where Mimes Come To Say Goodbye' or 'Fireflies Make us Sick' from their debut album. However, even though my first impression was the new CD was not as captivating as 'Wound In Wall,' 'Baby Teeth' does not leave my CD player on overcast winter days, or cold and blistery winter nights. It is a CD of one mood, where the debut is a CD of many moods...  So pick your poison of choice and lap it all up, courtesy of Atlanta's best kept secret, the trio that is Feeding Fingers.   --Coyote J
